Soon after, the state Legislature passed Assembly Bill 971, which provided for the campus to separate from its parent college. On July 1, 1958, the founding date of the present university, the institution became San Fernando Valley State College, with about 3,300 students and 104 faculty. On June 1, 1972, the college was renamed California State University, Northridge, by action of the state Legislature and the Board of Trustees of the California State University. Today, California State University, Northridge is a vibrant, diverse university community of nearly 28,000 students and more than 3,300 faculty and staff, sited on a 353-acre campus in the heart of Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley.

--------------------------------------------------------- Van Nuys was named after Isaac Van Nuys - who in 1871 bought with a corporation a San Fernando ranch of sixty thousand acres and engaged in the raising of stock, principally sheep, thus continuing during the subsequent three years. He then embarked in the raising of grain, and in 1876 loaded two vessels with wheat at San Pedro, this being the first cargo ever shipped from that point. The Van Nuys Airport opened in 1928 and today remains the busiest general aviation airport in the world and the fifth-busiest airport in the United States. --------------------------------------------------------- After the construction of the Owens Valley-Los Angeles Aqueduct, the mostly rural area was annexed by the city of Los Angeles in 1915 more than doubling the size of the city. Los Angeles continued to consolidate its territories in the San Fernando Valley by annexing Laurel Canyon (1923), Lankershim (1923), Sunland (1926), Tuna Canyon (1926), the incorporated city of Tujunga (1932), and Porter Ranch (1965). The additions expanded the Los Angeles portion of San Fernando Valley from the original 169 square miles to 224 square miles today. Five cities incorporated independent from Los Angeles: Glendale (1906), Burbank (1911), San Fernando (1911) Hidden Hills (1961), Calabasas (1991). Universal City is an unincorporated enclave that is home to Universal Studios theme park and Universal City Walk.
